At the end o In the end? – Errores comunes entre estudiantes de inglés

When should you use IN the end and when AT the end?

English – Spanish (versión española más abajo)

This is undoubtedly at the top of the list of most common errors among English students. I correct it quite a few times just in one single day, so it has become an old friend of mine. Students get frustrated to begin with when they hear my correction time after time, but after a while they realise they stop making this mistake altogether.

AT THE END – When to use it

At the end is more literal than ‘in the end’. It refers to the end, the final part, of something. We use ‘of’ in between ‘at the end’ and the noun it refers to. The noun could be, for example:

  • a placeat the end of the road (al final de la calle)
  • a period of timeat the end of the month (a finales de mes)
  • an eventat the end of the concert (al final del concierto)

There are many more common examples, such as ‘at the end of the book, the film, the lesson…’

IN THE END – When to use it

In the end is used to sum up a story, an idea, etc. and it means ‘finally’ and therefore has a more figurative meaning than ‘at the end’.

  • We spoke about it for a while and in the end decided to go on holiday to Italy. – Lo hablamos durante un rato y al final decidimos ir de vacaciones a Italia.
  • In the end he got away with not doing his share of the work – Al final se salió con la suya y no hizo la parte que le tocaba del trabajo.

AT THE END – Cuándo usarlo

At the end es más literal que ‘in the end’. Significa la parte final, el final de algo. Usamos la preposición ‘of’ entre ‘at the end’ y el sustantivo o nombre al que se refiere. Este sustantivo puede ser, por ejemplo:

  • un lugar at the end of the road (al final de la calle)
  • un periodo – at the end of the month (a finales de mes)
  • un evento at the end of the concert (al final del concierto)

Existen muchos más ejemplos comunes de su uso, como: ‘at the end of the book, the film, the lesson…’

IN THE END – Cuándo usarlo

In the end se usa cuando vamos a resumir una historia, idea, etc. Significa ‘finalmente’ (es decir, teniendo en cuenta todo lo ya dicho) y su significado es más figurativo (más metafórico) que el de ‘at the end’.
